Pensacola hosts USTA Men's Pro Circuit event

Pensacola, FL – (May 6, 2023) – Players are coming to Pensacola from all over the world to compete in the Pensacola Pro Tennis Championship, a USTA Men's Pro Circuit event. The tournament is scheduled for the week of May 15 - 21 at Roger Scott Tennis Center. The tournament is part of the 2023 USTA Pro Men's 25K Circuit.

Players representing Australia, Kazakhstan, Japan, Portugal and many more will descend on Northwest Florida to compete in this tournament. Pensacola Sports events coordinator Amy Marquez said this tournament will welcome the highest-ranking players they’ve ever had.

“For 2023, these are by far the highest ranked players we have had in the main draw,” said Marquez. “This is fantastic to have this level of play right here in Pensacola.”

Tournament Director Skip Vogelsang said this is much more than the usual local tennis tournament.

“These are professional players from all over the world coming to Pensacola for a week,” said Vogelsang. “These are folks you’ll see one day on tv at major tournaments. For example, we’ve had players go on to compete at the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.”     Past players include Alexander Zverev, Dennis Shapovalov, Felix Auger Aliassime and Jack Sock.

The only Pensacola player to qualify and register is Justin Lyons, a Catholic High senior. Justin said he’s honored to be able to compete.

“Being the only local player admitted to the tournament is such an honor with this tournament being at such a high level,” said Lyons. “And with there being so few opportunities for me to play these players I am very appreciative of this opportunity and cannot wait to play.

“Also, for Pensacola to have this level of players playing right here in Northwest Florida is amazing and gives a great opportunity for those in Pensacola to see a really high level of tennis or for the juniors to be motivated to improve.”
